Russian Translation Company was approached to work at the Global Fishery Forum (GFF) thanks to its long-standing customer, Congress. In 2018, we started providing translation, editing and proofreading services, mainly in English and in Russian.
In 2019, we provided simultaneous and consecutive interpretation at our first GFF in St Petersburg. That year, the working languages of the business programme included English, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Turkish. Two Russian—English consecutive interpreters were assigned to accompany the guests of honour. What makes the event particularly challenging is the variety of topics — from the food industry to shipbuilding. Not to mention the fact that the interpreters have to learn all kinds of fish names.
The Global Fishery Forum is an annual event that brings together fish industry actors from Russia and beyond.
Change of Operator
Unfortunately, the 2019 Global Fishery Forum turned out to be the last one for our client. However, in 2020, the new operator contacted us to provide remote simultaneous interpretation at the online conference «World Fish Market: International Cooperation vs. Pandemic.»
In 2021–2023, RPK provided interpretation at the Global Fishery Forum, engaging as many as 18 Arabic, Chinese, English, Farsi, French, Thai, and Turkish interpreters. Thai proved to be the most challenging, since Russian—Thai simultaneous interpreters simply do not exist. The solution we came up with was consecutive interpretation, which is how we translated the presentation by the Thai delegate.
Then we were hit with another surprise when one of the participants from Africa got up to give his speech and started speaking in French, when he had assured everyone beforehand he was going to talk in English. Fortunately, one of our French-speaking interpreters was present in the room. As soon as she realized what was going on, she quickly got onstage and provided consecutive interpretation of the speech.
Sadly, in 2024, financial issues forced the client to switch to a vendor offering lower prices. However, we provided translation services into the above languages plus Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish for two more years.
